Help us design Village Hope projects. We are constantly looking for people who will make a serious commitment to help us investigate projects for our focal villages. Tenacity, good writing skills, and reliability are essential; special skills are needed for some projects but not for others. Contact us by email (jon@villagehopeinc.org) or phone (208.870.9806) to discuss our current needs.

Authorize Albertson’s to contribute to Village Hope. If you live in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, or Montana, you can ask Albertson’s to donate 1-4% of your purchases to Village Hope. Just sign on to their web site Albertsons.com, click on Communities and follow the instructions to designate Village Hope as your charity of choice. Alternatively, just email us your preferred card number and we can register you. Albertson’s will then send us an amount equal to a percentage of your purchases. Convince your friends to do this too. It’s a painless way to support Village Hope.

Volunteer to coordinate a school project. We are trying to help six schools but right now we only have coordinators for three of them. This job requires good fund-raising skills; we can offer lots of advice to help you get started.

Contribute to a specific project.
Each school project involves the tasks described below:

Build a new school
$15,000
6 classrooms; one activity room with library and computers; Head teacher’s office, storeroom

Install a well and two toilets
$ 3,000
Dug or drilled well; separate toilets for boys and girls (a novel feature); hand-washing stations

Build quarters for teachers and visitors
$ 4,000
3-room apartment for Head Teacher and family; 2 rooms for other teacher(s) and visitors

Provide teacher certification programs
$ 2,000
Many teachers are not paid because they are not certified. For $1K we can enlist a teacher in a 3-year program which still allows them to teach in the community and leads to certification.

Purchase textbooks and exercise books
$ 1,000
The government provides fewer than 1 textbook for each 3 students; we want at least 1 textbook for every 2 students.

Total
$25,000
That’s right; all this for $25K—and costs may come down if a new approach to construction we are investigating proves feasible.

Please consider making a contribution to help carry out this work. Click the “Donate” button above and optionally tell us how to use your contribution. We promise to spend every penny exactly as you wish.

Fund a school program. Looking for a meaningful way to help a poor, rural community and perhaps commemorate someone at the same time? Consider funding a school program (as described above). We’ll work closely with you to select the school and design. We encourage potential donors to visit the community and we will make all the arrangements. Your school can be given a name of your choice and installation of a tasteful, locally-produced plaque will be part of the opening ceremony which we hope you will attend.

Village Hope is helping poor, rural communities in Sierra Leone achieve their goals for education, health, and economic security.

We are working with 33 villages, six elementary schools, and about 4500 peopole near Lunsar in northern Sierra Leone. Six “communities” have been formed, each consisting of a school and the villages that send students to the school.

A full-time Village Hope employee, living in Lunsar, works with these communities. The community provides information about themselves and their goals. Village Hope staff provide information about ways to improve education, health, and economic security. Loans are then provided to the community to carry out commmunity development or personal, income-generating projects.
